Simply internet can be defined as an international network of computers or a network of networks. The internet is actually rooted in the time of the cold war. The researchers who made the network that was eventually become the internet were motivated by a desire to establish a communication system that could survive an atomic attack.
Following the launch of the Sputnik satellite by the Soviet Union in 1957, the US defense department established the Advanced Research Projects Agency(ARPA) to develop the first US satellite, which was launched 18 months later. Later, ARPA undertook a new challenge, establishing a communication system to command and control the US’s ICBM missile system and strategic bomber fleet.
In 1963, the Rand Corporation was asked by ARPA to conceptualize the design principles behind such a system, a primary requirement being the ability to survive and remain functioning after a nuclear attack.
The Rand Corporation responded that the system would have ” no central authority” and would need to be designed from the beginning to ” Operate while in tatters.” These two characteristics define the essence of what later was to become first the Arpanet and then later the internet: a communication system, or network, that has no central authority and operates in a condition of assumed unreliability(cities destroyed by a nuclear blast, telephone line downs).
The irony, of course, is that what was to eventually become the anarchic Internet we know today, which even nation-states have great difficulty controlling, had its roots in a severe case of cold war paranoia.
The Arpanet was commissioned by the Department of Defense in 1969, initially linking research centers at four universities involved in defense research( UCLA, Standford University, University of Utah). Within the next two years, the Arpanet grew to 15 nodes( including MIT, Harvard, NASA/Ames, and others). By 1973, the ARPANET has expanded to England and Norway.
A number of key technologies that are associated with the internet were also developed in the early days of the ARPAnet.Telnet was introduced in 1972, standardizing the capability to dial in and log on to a computer on the network.FTP(File transfer protocol ) was introduced in 1973, standardizing how files were transferred between computers on the network. The first network-wide email system was established in n1977. Newsgroups (USENET) were introduced in 1979.
The problem initially faced by the founders of the internet was that many different topologies were in use. What would work to communicate with one network might not work with another network. The system needed a shared set of protocols, or agreed-upon rules, by which these different networks could all communicate with each other.
It does not matter what kind of system or device is connected to the internet-it only matters that systems or devices connected to the internet speak the same language when sending and receiving data over the internet. That language, in the form of a set of common protocols, is TCP/IP (Transmission control protocol/internet protocol) , which was introduced in 1982. Thus was born a “Network of networks “, or an internet.
